Home Life: Welcome Spring to Your Home

As shards off light start entering our homes and lighting up the dusty corners we might be starting to think about the Spring Clean. Throwing open the windows and getting a good playlist on (The One Day Soundtrack anyone?) while giving everything a good scrub.

But there are other ways we can embrace Spring in our homes and get our spaces ready for a fresh and happy summer at home without redecorating or replacing things. I find the pressure of summer really stressful so I spend a lot of time at home in the hotter months and love to create a space where I feel at peace. Embracing the seasons is increasing in popularity and for good reason - working with nature is a huge part of wellbeing we often overlook.

Here are the things I do in my home to welcome in Spring.

Repot your plants

Nothing says Spring more than repotting plants. If you don’t have any you can get spare pots off Facebook marketplace or by asking neighbours and then using a nourishing peat free compost. I like to treat them to a little bit of root love with this wonderful root fungi to nourish and strengthen roots. I also have a rejig and switch up their locations to keep things fresh.

Swap out foliage in vases

If your house has been adorned with dry branches, pampas and other gorgeous golden foliage, it might be worth thinking about putting these in storage for the warmer months and replace with fresh, foraged blooms and blossoms from walks (always forage and pick responsibly). I love twigs with blossom and when the cow parsley comes up… well, I go to town. I also have a eucalyptus tree growing in pot by my front door and it provides an endless stream of clippings for vases, table decor and shoots.

Rotate candles and scents

If musky and woody candles and oils have been providing the perfect scent for cosy, warm nights on the sofa it’s time to introduce in some fresher scents. I’m not keen on floral scents so instead opt for combos like lime and basil or orange blends. Rosemary is also very cleansing.

Rotate your soft furnishings

Like changing over your wardrobe, I love to pack away heavy throws and wool blankets. They go in a zip up bag and get put away until autumn. From storage out will come lighter throws - waffle weave cotton throws, linen quilts, ticking stripes… lovely. Likewise for any heavy cushions: wool and tufted cushions get changed for fresh linen and cotton ones. I know people who swap rugs too - but I never have the budget to afford a choice of rugs. Avoiding trends on soft furnishings helps to reduce waste and means you’ll be happy to pull out your trusty soft furnishings year after year.

Clean curtains and rotate mattress

On a warm day, start early and unhook your curtains, throwing them in the washing machine for a clean to get rid of the winters dust. Dry on the line if you have outdoors space if not partially dry them on a rack and then hang while still slightly damp.

Also, it’s easy to forget to rotate your mattress I try and do every season so get swivelling!

Stock take your kitchen cupboards

I am always amazed at how quickly things go out of date. Check cans and jars for a date and throw out any that are no longer usable. Also go through your dry weigh jars and check for what needs topping up and what date you filled them (I use a piece of masking tape on the back with the date written on). It’s also a really good idea to go through your medicine and first aid boxes and see what needs replacing, what you’re missing and what’s almost out of date.

Clear clutter

Set aside a day to clear and sort any piles of paperwork that have built up. File away or shred dealt with stuff. Likewise with emails - just because they’re digital doesn't mean sorting won’t clear your head. Then rejig kitchen surfaces. Sweep up any items that have found a home at the bottom of the stairs or lurking in baskets and rehome somewhere.
